A short history of Loughton

Loughton Camp, a Mesolithic fort within Epping Forest, points to prehistoric settlement nearby. The name is Old English and refers to a farm or settlement belonging to a man called Luhha. By the 1060s the Saxon vill was split into six manors and in 1060 Harold Godwinson gave two of them to Waltham Abbey. In 1086 Domesday Book listed the manors under the name Lochentuna and the abbey still held two of them. Mary Tudor owned the manor of Loughton Hall from shortly before 1553 and the Wroth family held it from 1578 to 1738. A new road through the forest in the early 17th century helped the village grow. Loughton Hall burnt down in 1836 and the railway arrived in 1856, bringing development at Baldwins Hill. Disputes over lopping rights led to the Epping Forest Act 1878 and Lopping Hall opened in 1884. The Debden estate was built from 1945. Thirty-seven listed buildings near the centre are all Grade II.
