A short history of Evesham

Evesham grew around an abbey founded about 701 by Egwin, third Bishop of Worcester, after a vision to a swineherd named Eof, who gave the town its name. It was recorded as Eveshomme in 709. A market was granted in 1055 and in the same century Earl Leofric of Mercia and his wife Godifu founded Holy Trinity Church at Bengeworth. The Domesday Book of 1086 records Evesham, listing two free men, two radmen and the abbeys of St Mary of Evesham and Pershore, with Walter named as Abbot of Evesham. The abbey was extended after the Conquest. Between 1149 and 1159 Abbot William had the Bengeworth castle destroyed. In 1265 Prince Edward defeated Simon de Montfort at the Battle of Evesham. The abbey was dismantled in 1540 leaving only the Bell Tower. Of 154 listed buildings near the centre, seven are Grade I.
