A short history of Kempston

The name Kempston joins a Primitive Welsh word for crooked to an Old English word for settlement and refers to a bend in the River Great Ouse. An Anglo Saxon burial site dates from the 6th century and the Domesday Book records the place as "camestone". Until the 19th century the parish was mainly rural with no central village, its people living in hamlets called Ends such as Up End and Bell End. All Saints church stood in Church End. The parish covered 5,025 acres at enclosure in 1804. Gravel digging began at Hill Grounds during the 1860s. East End, Bell End and Up End began to merge in the 19th century. Developers started Kempston New Town in 1870 and Kempston Barracks was completed in 1876. The parish was divided into urban and rural parts in 1896. A railway served the Hill Grounds pit from around 1910 until the early 1930s. Seventeen listed buildings near the centre are all Grade II.
