A short history of Bedford
Bedford began as a settlement at a ford on the River Great Ouse and its name is thought to come from a Saxon chief called Beda. Offa, the Mercian king, was buried here in 796, either within a newly founded minster that is now St Paul's Church or on the riverbank, where the river swept away all trace of his tomb. In 886 Bedford became a boundary town between Wessex and the Danelaw and in 919 Edward the Elder built the first known fortress here. Paine de Beauchamp later built a stronger castle, which was razed in 1224 and now survives as a mound. Borough status followed in 1166. Lace-making grew from the 16th century and John Bunyan wrote The Pilgrim's Progress in Bedford Gaol after 1660. The railway arrived in 1846. The area has 131 listed buildings, five of them Grade I, including the churches of St Paul, St Peter and St John.
