A short history of Droitwich Spa
Droitwich began as the Roman settlement of Salinae, which stood at the crossing of several roads. Salt was drawn from its brine from Roman times through the Middle Ages. Anglo-Saxon charters call the place Saltwich. King John granted a charter on 1 August 1215 that added Droit to the name. James VI and I renewed it on 8 November 1625. By the 1600s the Wintour family owned up to 25 salt pans. Boreholes sunk in 1725 ended the brine monopoly and parts of the town subsided. The Old Town Hall on St Andrews Street was finished in 1826 and brine baths opened in 1830. John Corbett later developed the spa and built Chateau Impney. Housing estates spread in the 1970s and 1980s. Floods struck the High Street in July 2007. Of 56 listed buildings near the centre, the Church of St Andrew and the Church of St Peter are Grade I.
