Burton Latimer takes the first part of its name from an Old English word for a settlement at a fort and it was once known as Burtone. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it in three entries. Guy of Raimbeaucourt held the largest, listing 21 villagers, 18 smallholders, one slave, two mills and 20 acres of meadow. Bishop Geoffrey of Coutances held the other two, with Walkelin of Harrowden as lord of one and Richard of the other. The Latimer family, resident in the 13th century, gave the second part of the name. Ironstone quarrying began around 1872 and the last pits closed in 1921. By 1885 four clothing factories had opened and a shoe factory followed in 1898. The area has 34 listed buildings, including Burton Latimer Hall with its wall and the Church of St Mary, both Grade I.
