Iron smelting took place at an unwalled Romano-British settlement, occupied until the 4th century, whose remains lie beneath the north of the present town. A burial site of at least a hundred cremation urns from the 5th century was later found beside Stamford Road. Kettering first appears in a 956 charter by which King Edwy gave land to Ælfsige the Goldsmith and in 972 King Edgar confirmed it to Peterborough monastery. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists Kettering manor as held by the Abbey of Peterborough, with 10 hides, land for 16 ploughs, 2 mills and 31 villans, valued at £11. The church dedicated to Peter and Paul was largely rebuilt in the mid 15th century and is Grade I listed, as is the Orangery at Barton Seagrave Hall.
