A short history of Birmingham

The name comes from the Old English Beormingahām, the home of Beorma's people, thought to have settled at Digbeth. The settlement probably existed by the early 7th century in the forested Arden region of Mercia. In 1166 Peter de Bermingham obtained a charter for a market at his castle and created a planned market town around the Bull Ring site. By 1327 only two other towns in Warwickshire were larger. Birmingham grew in the 18th century during the Industrial Revolution and by 1791 had a reputation as the world's leading place of manufacture. Bombing from summer 1940 to spring 1943 was followed by extensive rebuilding. Of 1428 listed buildings nearby 24 are Grade I including Aston Hall.
