A short history of Barwell
Barwell was known in Saxon times as Barwelle, a name linked to a boar and a stream and the place belonged to Earl Leofric of Mercia. In 1043 Leofric and his wife Godiva founded a Benedictine abbey at Coventry and Barwelle was one of twenty villages given to its abbot. The Domesday Book of 1086 records Barwelle as still held by the Abbey of Coventry, with 14 villagers, a priest and 3 smallholders, along with meadow and woodland, valued at 30 shillings. The manor was later given to Hugh de Hastings. St Mary's Church dates from 1220 and its list of rectors begins with William in 1209. A church census of 1564 counted 48 families. After the battle of Worcester the royalist Captain Shenton is said to have hidden in a wych-elm to evade parliamentarian soldiers. John Oneby bought the manor in 1660. The church is Grade I listed. On Christmas Eve 1965 fragments of a meteorite fell on the village.
