In the time of Edward the Confessor the place was recorded as Shultone, with five ploughlands worth five shillings. After William the Conqueror captured Leicester in 1068 he gave Earl Shilton to Hugh de Grandmesnil, who became sheriff of the county. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists Scheltone under Hugh, with three ploughs, one serf, four sokemen, a priest, ten villeins, five bordars, twelve acres of meadow, a mill and woodland.
