A short history of Walsall
The name Walsall is derived from an old phrase linking a valley with the Welsh, the Celtic Britons who were the earliest inhabitants of the area. William Fitz-Ansculf is believed to have held a manor here. By the early 13th century the town had a market and a manor house called Walsall Castle. A weekly Tuesday market began in 1220. The Crown held the manor and granted it in 1525 to Henry Duke of Richmond then in 1541 to Sir John Dudley before Queen Mary seized it in 1553. Henrietta Maria stayed a night at the White Hart in Caldmore in 1643. A railway line arrived in 1847. A Zeppelin raid in the First World War killed the mayoress and two others. Of the 83 listed buildings near the centre three are Grade II*: the Church of St Matthew, the Church of St Mary and the Guildhall.
