A short history of Willenhall
An eighth century treaty signed by King Ethelbald of Mercia records Willenhall as Willenhalch. The name may mean either Willa's meadow land or a nook of land by willows. It appears as Willenhale in 996 and as Winenhale in the Domesday Book of 1086 as a very small settlement. It stayed small and agricultural through the Middle Ages with marriages and burials held in Wolverhampton. Metal working grew from Tudor times and a fire in 1659 destroyed most of the town centre. The Bell Inn dates from the rebuilding in 1660. Iron and coal drove growth from the 18th century and a workhouse opened in 1741. Willenhall had no parish church until 1840. Cholera killed 292 people in 1849 and a Local Board of Health followed in 1854. The current St Giles dates from 1867. The Market Place clock went up in 1892. Twenty listed buildings are all Grade II.
