A short history of Broseley

A settlement stood here by 1086, when the Domesday Book recorded it as Bosle within the Hundred of Alnodestreu. That area was later broken up under King Henry I and Broseley and Willey passed to the Munslow Hundred before joining the Liberty of Wenlock when it was created under King Richard I. The name appears as Burewardeslega in 1177, pointing to a clearing or grove linked to a man called Burgheard or Burgweard. The earliest recorded pipe-maker was at work in 1590. By 1600 the town had only 27 houses and lay within the Shirlett Royal Forest, while wooden wagonways are evidenced from 1605. Coal and clay drove great expansion in the Industrial Revolution, with iron-making, pottery and clay pipes all prominent. John Wilkinson built the first iron boat while living here and Abraham Darby I is buried in the town. Decline followed in the later 19th century. Twenty-one Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre.
