A short history of Leicester

Leicester began as an Iron Age settlement beside the River Soar, dating from the last two centuries BC and seems to have controlled a ford. The Romans arrived around AD 47 and the site grew from about the year 50 as the tribal capital Ratae Corieltauvorum, gaining a forum and bathhouse in the 2nd century. The name appears as Ligera ceastre in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle entry for 924 and as Ledecestre in the Domesday Book of 1086. After the Norman Conquest the Beaumont and De Montfort Earls held the town, including Simon de Montfort, who died in 1265. It then passed to the House of Lancaster, whose castle became a royal residence from 1399. Parliaments met there in 1318, 1414 and 1450. Richard III spent his last days there before Bosworth and was buried in August 1485. Leicester supported Parliament in the Civil War. Victorian hosiery and shoe manufacturing brought rapid growth and city status followed in 1919. Of 416 listed buildings, Grade I examples include the Guildhall, the Magazine Gateway and the Church of St Margaret.
