A short history of Wigston
The 1086 Domesday Book names the place Wichingstone in the wapentake of Guthlaxton, with Hugh de Grandmesnil holding land there for the King. In the Middle Ages the place had two churches, All Saints' and St Wistan's, which led to its being called Wigston Two Spires. St Wistan's is linked to Wigstan, a Mercian prince regarded as a martyr after his assassination. Framework knitting was a major trade here between the 17th and 19th centuries and hosiery making carried on after the hand process faded. Bushloe House dates from about 1850 and was extended about 1880, with interiors by Christopher Dresser for the solicitor Hiram Abiff Owston. Twenty-two listed buildings stand within a mile of the centre, with the Church of All Saints at Grade I and Grade II* for the Church of St Thomas, 42 and 44 Bushloe End and a workshop behind number 44.
