Shifnal was probably founded by Anglians by the close of the 7th century. Its name has alternated between Idsall and Shifnal, thought to have been separate settlements either side of Wesley Brook. The Domesday Book of 1086 records Iteshale in the hundred of Alnodestreu, held by Robert, son of Theobald, from Earl Roger after Earl Morcar lost it. St Andrew's Church has a Norman chancel and passed to Shrewsbury Abbey around 1087. In 1245 Walter de Dunstanville was granted a market charter by Henry III and laid out the market streets. A blast furnace was built near the Manor House in the late 16th century. A fire on 7 July 1591 destroyed most buildings east of the brook but spared the church and Old Idsall House. Aston Hall was built about 1720. Of 46 listed buildings, the Church of St Andrew is Grade I while Aston Hall and The Idsall Rooms are Grade II*.
