A short history of Market Deeping
The name Deeping comes from an Old English word, dēoping, meaning a deep place. A market was held in the town from at least 1220. The town grew through trade on the River Welland, which boats could navigate as far as Stamford. The limestone Packhorse Bridge, now Grade II listed, was built in 1651 soon after the English Civil War. It was narrow enough for one line of traffic at a time and has refuge ledges on both sides for people on foot. Georgian stone buildings also came to stand along the riverbank. A marker on the bridge shows how high the water rose in the floods of 1880. Within half a mile of the centre there are 76 listed buildings. Two are Grade I: the Church of St. Guthlac and The Old Rectory and the East Wing. The village cross on Towngate is a scheduled monument.
