Quarrying on Broad Hill in the late 1800s turned up artefacts that suggest a Roman villa stood there in the 4th century. Pottery fragments point to a Norman settlement in the area before Hugh Lupus built a castle at Mountsorrel in 1080. In 1151 Robert le Bossu, Earl of Leicester, took the tenancy of the castle. The name is Norman-French and is thought to echo Montsoreau in France. Men from Nottingham acting for the King razed the castle in 1217. The village is first recorded in 1377, with 156 people. An act of 1782 allowed some 300 acres of open fields and common ground to be enclosed. Ralph Tebbutt had the Old Rectory built in 1783. Sir John Danvers built the Butter Market in 1793 to take the place of the fifteenth century market cross and the Leicester Navigation opened in 1794.
