Sileby's origins go back to around 840 AD, when Danes settled the area, which lay within the Danelaw. The name may derive from the Danish name Sighulf. The Anglican church of St Mary was founded around 1152 and is Grade II* listed and ten bells hang in its Gothic tower. Of the ten listed buildings near the village centre, nine are Grade II and St Mary's is the highest graded. The village was traditionally divided by a brook into St Mary's ward to the north and St Gregory's ward to the south. The Primitive Methodist Church dates from 1866 and was designed by James Kerridge, while the Wesleyan Methodist Church on High Street followed in 1884. Sileby became heavily industrialised in the Victorian period, with hosiery and shoe factories, a wallpaper manufacturer, engineering companies and a brewery whose Maltings buildings have since been redeveloped as homes.
