A short history of Castle Donington

The name Donington is read as a settlement connected with Dunna, though another suggestion points to a hill place. A charter of 1009 from Æthelred the Unready refers to King's Mill, a crossing of the River Trent. The Domesday Book of 1086 records Dunintune or Dunitone twice, once with land of Countess Ælfgifu and once with land given to Earl Hugh. In 1278 Edward I authorised a weekly market and a yearly Wakes Fair. A duchy of Lancaster warrant of 1484 gives the name as Castoldonyngtoin. The castle that stood on Castle Hill was given up and its stone went into Donington Hall. Lace-making mattered to the village until the 1850s, when the population dropped sharply. The power station was built in 1958 and closed in 1994. Of 55 listed buildings near the centre, the Church of St Edward King and Martyr is Grade II*.
