A short history of Long Eaton
A Roman fort is recorded east of All Saints' Church. The Domesday Book records the place as Aitone. Suggested origins of the name include a farm sited among streams or ground lying low. It began as a farming settlement near the lowest point where the River Erewash was bridged. A fire in 1694 destroyed 14 houses and other buildings in the market place. The Midland Counties Railway of 1839 and the Erewash Valley Line of 1844 encouraged growth. Lace-making and railway wagon manufacture came to employ many people. Housing, offices and factories were built through the Victorian period. In 1921 Wilsthorpe and parts of Sandiacre and Sawley were added. Of 24 listed buildings near the centre, Church of All Saints is Grade I while The Hall and Church of St Laurence and St James are Grade II*.
