A short history of Ilkeston

Ilkeston was probably founded in the 6th century and its name is thought to come from Elch or Elcha, an Anglian chieftain. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Tilchestune, held mainly by Gilbert de Ghent, who also controlled Shipley, West Hallam and Stanton by Dale. King Henry III granted a charter in 1252, which gave rise to the market place fair. Iron working in the area dates back to Roman times and the Stanton Ironworks grew into a major concern from the 1780s. Thomas Potter built the Ilkeston Bath in 1831, which drew visitors until its closure just before 1900. The two fairs were combined in 1888, a year after Queen Victoria created Ilkeston a borough in 1887. Twenty-five listed buildings stand near the centre, including the Church of All Saints at Grade I.
