A short history of Cromer

Cromer is absent from the Domesday Book of 1086. The name first appears in a will dated 1262 and may mean a lake associated with crows, although a northern word for an opening in the cliffs is another possible origin. The present town, centred on the church of Saints Peter and Paul, is thought to be the place called Shipden-juxta-Felbrigg in 1337 and was known as Cromer by the late 14th century. The other Shipden lies under the sea north east of the pier, where the steamer Victoria struck the remains of its church tower in 1888. In the early 1800s the town became a resort, with wealthy Norwich banking families taking summer homes. Clement Scott began writing about the area in 1883 and named it Poppyland. A storm surge in December 2013 damaged the pier and seafront. Of 38 listed buildings near the centre, Cromer Hall with its stables is Grade II*.
