A short history of Sheringham
Sheringham appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Silingeham. Later records give Siringeham in 1174 and Scheringham in 1242. The name means the homestead of Scira's people. The parish took in two villages. Upper Sheringham was given to farming while Lower Sheringham combined it with fishing. Lower Sheringham was the fishing station for the main village and became the present town when the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway arrived in the late 19th century. Fishing peaked in that period and the early 20th century. Sheringham Town Hall was completed in 1912. On 19 January 1915 Zeppelin L 4 dropped two bombs here, making it the first place in Britain attacked from the air by a Zeppelin. A war memorial by Herbert Palmer was unveiled on 1 January 1921. Of six listed buildings nearby one is Grade I, the Priory of St. Mary in the Meadow.
