A short history of Arnold

Arnold appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Ernehale, a name taken to mean a place frequented by eagles or a valley of eagles. A local history of 1913 offered a different reading, linking the name to herons. Arnot Hill Park was laid out around 1792 as a setting for Arnot Hill House in Daybrook, home of the Hawksley family. In the 19th century Arnold was a centre of framework knitting and on 11 March 1811 it saw the first framebreaking of the Luddite riots, when 63 frames were smashed. John Robinson founded the Home Brewery in 1875 and the company was incorporated in 1890. Its office building in Daybrook dates from 1936 and is Grade II listed, with a frieze by Charles Doman. The brewery site closed in 1996. Around the town centre stand 19 listed buildings, including three Grade II* churches: St Paul, St Mary and the Roman Catholic Church of the Good Shepherd.
