A short history of Nottingham

The name comes from the Old English Snotingaham, meaning the homestead of the followers of a man called Snot. In 919 Edward the Elder took the settlement and raised a fortress on the Trent's southern bank. The Anglo-Saxon settlement lay in what is now the Lace Market, defended by a ditch and rampart. The ditch was disused and infilled by 1086, the year of Domesday Book. After the Norman Conquest William the Conqueror built a castle there and placed it in the care of William Peverel. A French Borough grew near the castle beside the English Borough. Richard the Lionheart besieged and took the castle in 1194. The Black Death of 1349 is believed to have killed about 60% of the population. Nottingham became a county corporate in 1449. Rioters set fire to the Duke of Newcastle's residence on the castle site in 1831. A city charter followed in 1897.
