A short history of Hartford
The Domesday Book entry of 1086 shows Gilbert de Venables holding the manor within the Barony of Kinderton. Before the reign of Edward III a family that adopted the local name held it and it later passed to the Horton, Massey, Holcroft, Marbury and Davies families. The township was split between two ancient parishes. In 1644 Royalists from Chester fought Parliamentary forces from Northwich at Hartford Green during the Civil War. A church was consecrated in 1824. Hartford joined the Northwich poor law union in 1836 and became a civil parish in 1866. In 1875 John Douglas designed St John the Baptist Church to replace the earlier building, which had become too small for the growing population. A churchyard war memorial of 1921 honours villagers who fought in the First World War. Eight listed buildings stand near the centre, seven at Grade II and The Beeches at Grade II*.
