A short history of Davenham
Legend says St Wilfrid founded a church here while travelling across Cheshire in the 7th century. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists the place as Devenham, a name meaning a small settlement beside the River Dane and notes a priest and a church there, which is the earliest record of a church in the village. A Norman castle known as Shipbrook Castle stood beside the Dane. The name Castle Hill marks its site although nothing of it remains. The church standing today is the fourth on the site. It was largely rebuilt from 1844 to 1870 in Victorian Gothic revival style and its tower carries a recessed spire added in 1850. In 1936 all of Eaton and part of Leftwich civil parish were added to Davenham. In 1955 part of Davenham was moved into Northwich civil parish. Sixteen listed buildings lie near the centre. The Church of St Wilfred and Davenham Hall are both Grade II*.
