A short history of Northwich

Northwich stands where the rivers Weaver and Dane meet. The Romans knew it as Condate and valued its river crossing and salt brines. Archaeological evidence points to a Roman auxiliary fort in the area now called Castle, dated to AD 70. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Norwich, a third wich in the Mildestuic hundred, held at farm for £8 and described as waste when Earl Hugh received it, though worth 35s by then. The Earls of Chester held the manor until 1237. Sir William Brereton fortified and garrisoned the town for the Parliamentarians in 1642 and 1643. Rock salt was found in the 1670s on the Smith-Barry family estate at Marbury Hall. Brine extraction caused subsidence, which formed Witton Flash in 1880. Twenty-eight listed buildings stand near the centre, including Winnington Hall and the Church of St Helen, both Grade I.
