A short history of Bollington

In the Middle Ages Bollington was part of Macclesfield, a manor of the Earl of Chester and it also lay within the ancient parish of Prestbury. George Antrobus built the original mill at Lower Mills in 1792 and from the late 18th century cotton spinning became the town's major industry, lasting until the mid-20th century. Defiance Mill went up on Queen Street about 1800 and the population stood at 1,231 in 1801. Lowerhouse Mill followed in 1819. In the 1830s and 1840s Thomas Oliver and Martin Swindells rented the Lower Mills building to make fine cotton thread for lace makers. By 1851 the population had reached 4,655 and Swindells built Adelphi Mill in 1856. Waterhouse Mill, since demolished, spun cotton in demand among lace makers in Nottingham and Brussels. White Nancy, on Kerridge Hill, commemorates the victory at Waterloo. The centre has 24 Grade II listed buildings including Hollin Old Hall and the Cock And Pheasant Inn.
