A short history of Macclesfield
Before the Norman Conquest Macclesfield belonged to Edwin, Earl of Mercia. Three early crosses from that period now stand in West Park. The name comes from the Old English personal name Maccel combined with a word for open country. The Normans devastated the area in 1070. The Domesday Book of 1086 records Maclesfeld as held by Hugh d'Avranches, Earl of Chester, with a mill, meadow for oxen and woodland measuring 6 leagues by 4. Its value had fallen from £8 to 20 shillings. A borough charter of 1261 granted a market, a fair and courts. All Saints' Church, later renamed St Michael's, was built in 1278. Work on Macclesfield Castle began in 1398 and the grammar school was founded in 1502. Silk manufacturing grew from the mid 18th century. The centre has 221 listed buildings, including 18 at Grade II*, among them Charles Roe House, Jordangate House, the Church of St Alban and the Unitarian Chapel.
