Saxon settlers later founded a community, recorded before the Norman Conquest as Weringtun when it headed a hundred. The Domesday Book of 1086 entered it as Wallintun. A bridge is first mentioned in 1285 and in 1321 Warrington became Lancashire's first paved town. On 13 August 1651 the Battle of Warrington Bridge gave the Royalists their final win of the Civil War. The town industrialised after the Mersey became navigable in the 18th century. Warrington gained new town status in 1968 and Birchwood was developed on the former Risley ordnance factory site. A bomb attack on 20 March 1993 killed two children. Of 206 listed buildings near the centre the Town Hall, its two outbuildings and the Church of St Wilfrid are Grade I.
