Remains of Roman roads and buildings were found on White Hill, between Brinsworth and Canklow, along with pottery from the end of the 2nd century and the 3rd. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Brynesford, a name thought to mean Bryni's ford. Most of the land was waste after the Harrying of the North and was shared between Roger de Busli and William de Percy. Growth came during the 1800s once pits were opened in the surrounding area. New housing estates were built in the 1950s. The Brinsworth and Canklow War Memorial is listed at Grade II.
