A short history of Prescot
Prescot's name is thought to come from Anglo-Saxon words for a priest and a small dwelling, suggesting a priest's cottage. William Dacre, 2nd Baron Dacre, secured a charter during the 14th century that allowed a market lasting three days and a moveable fair, beginning on the Wednesday after Corpus Christi. In 1593 Edward and Isabell Winstanley, parents of the political philosopher Gerrard Winstanley, were married in the town. From the mid-1590s to 1609 Prescot had a purpose-built Shakespearean theatre, the Prescot Playhouse, probably on Eccleston Street. The town held about 400 people in the sixteenth century and was not much larger by the late seventeenth. Watch and clock making was central to its industry in the 18th and 19th centuries and it came to an end when the Lancashire Watch Company collapsed in 1910. BICC later became the main employer before leaving in the early 1990s. Within a mile of the centre stand 23 Grade II listed buildings.
