A short history of Sale
A flint arrowhead found in Sale points to prehistoric activity and the Roman road between Chester and York ran through the area. The name comes from the Old English salh, referring to a sallow tree. Local names suggest settlement in the 7th or 8th century. The township does not appear in the Domesday Book of 1086, possibly because the survey was only partial. The manor was one of those held by the baron William FitzNigel, who split it into two shares for Thomas de Sale and Adam de Carrington. Sale is first recorded between 1199 and 1216. Sale Old Hall was built around 1603 for James Massey. In 1745 Crossford Bridge was pulled down to slow Jacobite forces. The Bridgewater Canal reached Sale by 1765. Sale became a separate civil parish in 1866. Of 25 listed buildings nearby, the Church of St Martin and the Church of St John the Divine are Grade II*.
