A short history of Wallasey
The name Wallasey combines an Old English word for a Briton or Welshman with an ending meaning an island or dry land, as the higher ground was once cut off by a creek, marshes and dunes. Old maps show the parish church of St Hilary's at what is now Wallasey Village, with hamlets at Liscard, Poulton and Seacombe. Farming and fishing were the main work, alongside smuggling and wrecking. Fort Perch Rock was built in 1829 and Liscard Hall was built in 1835 by Sir John Tobin. Docks were cut into Wallasey Pool from 1842 and were largely finished by 1877. After 1886 housing spread quickly around Liscard and Wallasey Village, while New Brighton grew as a resort and its tower opened in 1900. Of 63 listed buildings nearby, five are Grade II*, including Bidston Hall and Wallasey Town Hall.
