A short history of Stretford

Stone axes from about 2000 BC are the earliest evidence of people in the area. The name Stretford comes from an Old English word for a road combined with a ford over the River Mersey and the modern Chester Road runs along the course of the Roman way between Chester and Manchester, which crossed the river at that ancient ford. By 1212 there were two manors, held by Hamon de Mascy in the south and Henry de Trafford in the north. Around 1260 the Trafford family gained the de Mascy land and the two manors descended together afterwards. Hand-weaving of cotton had declined by 1826 and market gardening, rhubarb and pigs for Manchester earned the village the nickname Porkhampton. The Royal Botanical Gardens opened in 1831 and held the Art Treasures Exhibition in 1857. The Manchester Ship Canal arrived in 1894 and the population rose from 21,751 in 1891 to 30,436 in 1901. Bombing in December 1940 killed 73 people. Nine buildings are listed at Grade II, including Union Baptist Church and Church of St Matthew.
