A short history of Bolton upon Dearne
The name Bolton comes from the Old English word bōðltūn, which referred to a group of buildings. The Domesday Book records the place within the Manor of Bolton-upon-Dearne with Goldthorpe, held by Roger de Busli. It was an ancient parish. In the early 18th century a Barnsley attorney, William Henry Marsden of Burntwood Hall, purchased the manor, which covered more than 1,000 acres, at a price of £10,000. The Inclosure Awards of 1761 to 1767 record both Bolton upon Dearne and Goldthorpe. The Marsden family held the manor until 1815. The Local Government Act 1894 placed the parish in Doncaster Rural District. In 1899 it was made an urban district of its own and in 1937 that district was abolished and merged into the larger Dearne Urban District. Five listed buildings stand near the centre. The highest graded is the Church of St Andrew at Grade I.
