In medieval times it was a small farming village and the Domesday Book places it within the Manor of Bolton upon Dearne, once owned by Roger de Busli. In 1361 Robert de Goldthorpe, whose father was lord of the manor there, married Esabul de Shepley. Descendants bearing the Goldthorpe surname were the main landowners for almost 200 years. In the early 18th century the Barnsley attorney William Henry Marsden of Burntwood Hall paid £10,000 for the lordship of Bolton upon Dearne and Goldthorpe, taking in over 1,000 acres. Goldthorpe features in the Inclosure Awards of 1761 to 1767. The Marsden family kept the manor until 1815. Coal mining was the major industry for much of the 19th and 20th centuries. The church of St John and St Mary Magdalene dates from 1916. Two teenage boys died in 1984 collecting coal during the Miners' Strike and Goldthorpe Colliery closed in 1994.
