A short history of Ossett
The name Ossett comes from Old English and is thought to mean either a livestock enclosure belonging to a man called Osla or an enclosure that blackbirds frequented. Another theory ties it to King Osbehrt, who may have died there in 867 after fighting the Great Heathen Army. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists Osleset in the Manor of Wakefield, with three and a half carucates of land, woodland pasture, four villeins and three bordars. Coal has been mined locally since the 14th century. In the early 19th century a small spa drew visitors. Old Roundwood pit opened in 1851. A plan in the 1870s to turn the town into a second Harrogate failed and the spa closed. The Chidswell riot of 1893 arose when striking miners tried to reach Westfield. Small mills producing shoddy also shaped the town. Bombs were dropped on Ossett by mistake on 16 September 1940 and nobody was killed. The Church Of The Holy Trinity is its highest graded listed building at Grade II*.
