A short history of Horbury
Horbury appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as (H)orberie, a name linked to Old English words for dirty land and a fortification. Together with Crigglestone it alone in the Manor of Wakefield escaped being recorded as waste and the survey noted about 40 people, four ploughs and much woodland. A church dating from about 1106 stood here and the crown gave the manor to the Earls Warenne that year. Sir John de Horbury died in 1306 and the village then became a graveship of the manor. A local will of 1404 left money for a wooden bridge over the River Calder. Horbury Hall, now Grade I listed, was built in 1474 and another will of 1492 also provided for the bridge. John Carr built the Grade I listed Church of St Peter and St Leonard between 1790 and 1794. Steam engines were installed at two mills in 1795 and Luddites destroyed one of them. Charles Roberts moved his wagon works to Horbury Junction in 1873.
