A short history of Kippax
Kippax has an Anglo-Saxon name, which seems to join a personal name with a word for ash tree, suggesting the village began in wooded land. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Chipesch. Charters from the 1090s to the 1270s give Kippeys and forms such as Kypask and Kypax appear from the 13th century. The surname Kippax is first recorded in the late 14th century, with several people listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax Records of 1379. The church was originally Anglo-Saxon and was altered considerably in Norman times and Saxon herringbone masonry survives in its tower. The Church of St Mary is Grade I listed and five other listed buildings are Grade II. Manor Garth Hill ringwork is a scheduled monument. Kippax was an administrative centre for hundreds of years but stayed small and mostly agricultural until coal mining began in bell pits in the late 18th century. Deeper mining and coal seams found at Allerton Bywater brought rapid growth in the 19th century. A railway linking Garforth and Castleford opened in 1873.
