A short history of Garforth
Garforth appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Gereford and Gereforde. Spellings beginning with gar first appear in 1336 as Garford. The name seems to come from Norse words for a triangular plot of land and a ford. That plot is believed to have stood where the road now named The Beck bends sharply. The district also once included Church Garforth, first recorded in the fifteenth century as Kirkgarford. The town grew mainly in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when the Gascoigne family, who owned land locally, worked a number of mines nearby. Nearby villages also prospered from coal. Garforth Scout Group has existed since 1908. Six listed buildings stand within 0.7 miles of the centre, all Grade II, including bridges and a footbridge linked to the railway.
