A short history of Pudsey

In the early sixth century the district belonged to the Kingdom of Elmet, which appears to have held on to its Celtic character for up to two centuries after neighbouring kingdoms took on Anglian identity. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Podechesai. The origin of the name is uncertain, but it most likely joins a possible personal name, Pudoc, to a word for island, taken to mean a patch of good ground in moorland. Owlcotes deserted medieval village survives as a scheduled monument. Around 1775 Benjamin Scholfield found a hoard of a hundred silver Roman coins on Pudsey Common at a spot traditionally called King Alfred's Camp. Pudsey became known for wool manufacture in the 18th and 19th centuries. Lying on low ground between Leeds and Bradford it received smoke on most winds during the Industrial Revolution and gained a name for soot. There are 42 listed buildings within a mile of the centre, all Grade II.
