A short history of Beverley

Beverley began in the seventh century, when the Bishop of York later known as John of Beverley founded a church at Inderawuda in the Anglian kingdom of Northumbria. The monastery was abandoned in haste around the 850s, probably because of Viking invasion, yet pilgrims increased the population in the tenth century and the name became Bevreli or Beverlac, a reference to beavers on the River Hull. John was made a saint in 1037. The Domesday Book of 1086 records around 19 households in the Hundred of Sneculfcros. Thurstan granted borough status in 1122. A fire in 1188 damaged the Minster, the Knights Hospitallers received the Manor of the Holy Trinity in 1201 and building of the present Minster began in 1220. After the Reformation the town declined, with a rising on the Westwood in October 1536. There are 446 listed buildings near the centre, with Grade I including the Minster and St Mary's Church.
