A short history of Hornsea
The name Hornsea probably comes from Old Norse words meaning horn, headland and sea or lake. An Anglo-Saxon burial ground was found near Cliff Road in 1913 and excavated again in 1982. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists the manor as Hornesse. Around 1088 Odo, Count of Aumale, granted St Mary's Abbey in York the manor with its church and land while fishing rights on the Mere passed to the abbey too. St Nicholas' church dates to the 13th century. In the medieval period Hornsea served as a market town, a fishing settlement and a port, but erosion of the coast had ended its standing as a port by the 1500s. A storm in 1732 unroofed around 40 buildings and the church spire is said to have fallen in 1733. The Hull and Hornsea Railway arrived in 1864 and the town grew. Of 24 listed buildings near the centre, the Church of Saint Nicholas is Grade I and The White House Grade II*.
