Habitation around Bridlington dates to the Bronze Age and Roman period and Roman coins have turned up near the harbour. The name joins an Old English personal name to a word for a small farming settlement. In 1072 the area was granted to Gilbert de Gant. The 1086 Domesday Book lists it as Bretlinton, the meeting point of the Hunthow Wapentake, held by Earl Morcar and later passing to William the Conqueror by forfeiture. Its yearly value had fallen from £32 under Edward the Confessor to eight shillings, with most land waste. Walter de Gant founded an Augustinian priory in 1133 and King John allowed a weekly market in 1200. In 1633 the manor was sold to 13 townsmen. Queen Henrietta Maria landed with troops in 1643. Of 157 listed buildings nearby the Bayle Gate and Parish Church of St Mary are Grade I.
