In the 13th century Guisborough Priory and Jervaulx Abbey held the land until the Dissolution of the Monasteries and later owners included the Percys and the Parrs. Large scale building began in the late 1970s and the first phase opened on 30 July 1981. Five listed buildings stand nearby and all are Grade II.
