A short history of Yarm

The name Yarm is thought to come from an Old English word for fish pools, giving the sense of the place of the fish pools. A Viking Age helmet of about the 10th century was found in the town. The Domesday Book of 1086 mentions Yarm, which began as a chapelry within the parish of Kirklevington and afterwards became a parish itself. During the 1200s Yarm held borough status, though this did not last. Dominican Friars settled around 1286 and kept a friary and hospital until 1583. Skirlaw, Bishop of Durham, had a stone bridge built over the Tees in 1400. On 1 February 1643 Royalist and Parliamentarian forces clashed here. The Friarage was built in 1770 on the cellars of the friary. In 1821 a meeting at the George & Dragon Inn pressed for the Bill that allowed the Stockton & Darlington Railway to be built. The town has 44 listed buildings, including 10 and 12 High Street and 14 High Street at Grade II*.
