A short history of Middlesbrough

A monastic cell consecrated by St Cuthbert in 686 at the request of St Hilda grew into Middlesbrough Priory. The name may reflect a position between Durham and Whitby, with Mydilsburgh as its earliest recorded form. Angles and later Vikings settled the area and Ormesby, Stainsby and Tollesby were recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. In 1119 Robert Bruce confirmed the church of St Hilda to Whitby. The priory closed in 1537. By 1801 the farming township held just 25 people. In 1829 Joseph Pease and fellow Quaker businessmen bought the estate to build a coal port. Bolckow and Vaughan founded an ironworks in 1841 and a dock opened in 1842. Incorporation followed in 1853 and by the mid-1870s the town made a third of the country's pig iron. It was bombed on 25 May 1940. Of 101 listed buildings nearby, the outbuildings and stableblock at Ormesby Hall and Acklam Hall are Grade I.
